Hi Sabrina,
I like the topic of your learning resources very much, because I am also a member of the computer department. I have studied HTML before. For beginners, I think it is more important to strengthen interest in this thing than to troubleshoot the code when problems occur. For example, the earliest formula we learn about Java is system out. Println (”hello world”), which is the most interesting kind of participation.

Hi Patrick,
In your article, I first saw your introduction to the two groups and your adjustment to your learning resources according to the particularity of each group, such as the working hours of single mothers and the time spent raising children. The solution is to cancel their learning time requirements. This example is very good. It is also very important for deaf or hearing impaired people to understand knowledge in other ways. As you mentioned, I like your method very much.

Hello, braelyn,
After reading your article, I have a more detailed understanding of the open teaching method. You can well explain the advantages of this teaching method and the differences between open teaching and traditional teaching from the identity of learners, as well as the differences between some points and experiential teaching. As a student, I also like open teaching very much, because the development of resources is more convenient for us to learn.

Blog4: INTERACTION

The course I choose is drawing. First of all, I need to let students know what drawing is, what improvements drawing has made to our lives, and whether it is good interest. So I found this video about drawing on YouTube. “The Drawing Exercise that Changed My Life”

In this video, I first introduced the author’s earliest drawing experience and recommended a book called’Drawing on the right side of the brain’the author is’bettyedwards’ according to his introduction, drawing can exercise our brain. According to scientific knowledge, the left side of our brain is responsible for processing various analytical matters, while the right side of our brain is responsible for creativity. The work of the right brain is very important. The video author mentioned a very good example, drawing the scene you see. This sentence means that you feel very relaxed. Your brain will soon be able to give you an image, but the things you draw may be very different from what you think. This is very difficult for the coordination between the hand and the brain. For example, when you see a mobile phone, you can draw its general shape, But you will not use drawing skills to make it more vivid, draw its light and dark, draw its thickness, and three-dimensional sense. This is what drawing can bring to us. The author’s example is to draw a shoe, but there is a very big gap between the shoes drawn directly from memory and the shoes drawn through drawing skills. Drawing sends out the author’s ideas through lines and colors, which is a language of communication with people. How to practice drawing is also the key point mentioned by the author. Extract the lines from a photo, and then copy the pictures bit by bit to present them in your own drawing. This practice will improve your line skills and increase your sense of achievement in drawing. This is what I want to share with students in class.

A PEER REVIEW OF AN INTERACTIVE RESOURCE

“How to succeed at University” is the topic I choose to give a peer review.

It can be seen from the title that the people they are facing are new college students. Then they tell how to face college life as a freshman, how to balance life and learning, how to release the pressure in life or learning, etc. First of all, I look at this ppt from the perspective of a new college student. First of all, I think the only thing that helps me is to plan time, because other contents are actually equivalent to a popular science knowledge, such as the explanation of why people are distracted and how much time they lose in the ppt. This is actually a very vague concept, because your content does not cite relevant scientific knowledge, and you are not sure about the authenticity of the information. Secondly, you have given many questions after many titles, but you have not given corresponding explanations about these questions. Why should we think about such questions. Instead, you give a direct view of what you think is good. Are these questions really important. How to relieve stress? The first thing in the PPT is to practice under pressure, which has conflicted with the theme of avoiding stress. Since we want to avoid stress, why should we practice under pressure? In fact, it can be changed to adapt to or overcome stress. Deep breathing, repeating a cue word, but did not explain its role. In the learning activity, it is impossible to draw an unclear concept in 10 minutes. There are more things to do in class and read after class. It is recommended to read the article. Why not extract the key information and tell the students. In fact, many of the things written in the PPT are things that students should know in daily life, so some of the contents can be simplified, not omitted, but the corresponding problems or explanations can be shortened. For example, attention. There is no need to explain several types of memory written here. The previous page gave how to optimize attention, but I didn’t see how to teach how to optimize attention. Instead, I wrote about the importance of attention, which needs to be improved.
From my point of view, there are many areas that need to be improved

  1. there is too much content on each page of the PPT, so it is difficult to attract readers to read. Too much content is easy to cause visual fatigue, which makes readers skip the content
  2. for the content layout, I found that the questions given behind the questions have subtitles in “how to optimize attention”. How to arrange them should be clearer.
  3. no description of learning theory
  4. it does not specify how to accommodate different learners

Inclusive Design

Inclusive design is the process of continuously designing solutions to adapt to views, experiences and situations that people have not considered before. To a large extent, inclusive design is to eliminate exclusion. It is emphasized that inclusive design is a process. The key to understanding inclusive design: it is an ongoing behavior, not an end result. We should be as inclusive as possible
Among the courses made according to my group, our courses are aimed at hearing-impaired and English learners. Our courses are to learn the basic knowledge of painting, such as the type of brush, the practice of drawing lines, the light and dark sides of the picture, and introduce some well-known works of art. Let them know how to draw by learning the most basic things.
First of all, according to their different situations, we will set up some tips to show them by painting, so as to understand our content. Secondly, we can prepare paper and pen, so that they can gain experience through practice. This is part of inclusive design, and we can solve the communication problems with them through pictures.
In addition, when students encounter problems, they can change their teaching methods, avoid obstacles from another angle, improve the participation and interest of each student, so that they will not have a dislike for painting and improve their knowledge.

Blog2: Learning Design II

The learning environment I chose after group discussion is direct instruction. The direct instruction method is a method of teaching directly in the language taught without the help of my native language. The meaning of ‘direct’ is the meaning of directly connecting language with objective things such as words or things.

Direct instruction is the oldest, most popular, and most practical teaching method at present. For example, when we were infants, our parents were our earliest teachers, teaching us how to pronounce and speak sentence by sentence. Here we use direct instruction. In primary school, we are exposed to more knowledge, and direct teaching is the most efficient way to learn things, mathematics, In primary school, we need to learn addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Direct instruction is when the teacher gives us examples of each question type and teaches us how to get the correct answer. This is direct instruction. In China, most of the teaching methods are direct instruction, which is something I have experienced personally.

The theme of our group is drawing. I think direct instructions are very suitable for this topic. For example, first, we need to understand the preparation of drawing and how to understand various types of pencils. I can directly tell the students which types are available from thin to thick, and then the choice of paper and the matching of pigments. These are necessary knowledge that students need to remember, However, if exploratory learning or other methods are used, students may miss some key information when learning this basic knowledge. Then drawing can not draw the desired pattern with a pen. First, the teacher needs to directly demonstrate how to draw a draft, such as the space in the drawing, the basic lines of objects, etc. these direct instructions can easily and effectively let the students understand how to draw without blind self-exploration.

Of course, this learning mode also has many shortcomings, such as being boring, unable to develop students’ own creative thinking, and having no time for students to discuss. These often conflict with the exploration, analysis, creation, and reflection on our subject. So in my opinion, direct instruction is applicable to the basis of learning painting. If you need to know more, you need to discuss it in combination with other learning methods, such as experiential learning.

Finally, I think this direct instruction is a good way for much basic education, I will talk about my topic in this way later because this method is most suitable for people who do not know.

Hi sullo,

The learning experience you share is very good. Learning plan is a very good choice. Doing the planned things at a specific time every day and special environment will also improve the quality of learning.
Thank you,
ZHENYU WANG

Hi Derek,
After reading your blog, I have many ideas . K12 education system is very mature at present, especially in North American countries. Students can have a lot of school interest courses instead of boring textbooks, which often comes from 9-year compulsory education in China. On the contrary, students still have enough time to practice or pursue their favorite direction every day.
Thanks,
ZHENYU WANG

Blog1:Learning, Motivation, and Theory

In modern society, learning is inevitable. After reading the article, I have a certain understanding and my own views on learning theory and learning motivation.

  1. the need to learn a new skill or solve a current problem
  2. the sense that it is something we will enjoy or be good at
  3. an interest or curiosity about the topic

“(Motivation and Learning, 2022).
First of all, we need to know what to study. In another article, we wrote three points that disagree with the second point because, in my opinion, no one is naturally good at something. We can fully master a skill step by step from the primary level, so I think we can learn and master it through our love for things, but we can never be good at things without learning.

I am a student of computer science. In a professional course seng265 last semester, I encountered the most difficult thing since my university. Before that, this has not happened in every course I have taken. This is a course on software development, but I was a little flustered when the teacher sent us the first assignment in the second week of school, Because I have never learned the programming language required by this assignment, but now my assignment needs it, so this has become my motivation to learn a new skill. Of course, this is a very difficult challenge for me. I have to master a very difficult programming language in a very short time, and it takes a semester to normally learn a programming language, so I set a plan for myself, spend at least 3 hours a day browsing and reading relevant books and teaching videos, and find some simple problems to practice programming. Finally, I succeeded and learned one more programming language on the basis of learning the seng265 course.

In my opinion, behaviorists, cognitivism, and constructivists have very different learning styles. For example, a high school social study teacher is planning a class on climate change Behaviorists will take action to get some weather data to strengthen the course content. Cognitivism will discuss with learners to let students develop their own thinking to imagine climate change, while constructivists actively call on students to experiment and gain experience. For me, behaviorists are worth learning, because the action is the only standard to prove real-time truth.

Welcome and Introduction

Before proceeding with this first blog post, we expect you to consider your privacy preferences carefully and that you have considered the following options:

  1. Do you want to be online vs. offline?
  2. Do you want to use your name (or part thereof) vs. a pseudonym (e.g., West Coast Teacher)?
  3. Do you want to have your blog public vs. private? (Note, you can set individual blog posts private or password protected or have an entire blog set to private)
  4. Have you considered whether you are posting within or outside of Canada? This blog on opened.ca is hosted within Canada. That said, any public blog posts can have its content aggregated/curated onto social networks outside of Canada.

First tasks you might explore with your new blog:

  • Go into its admin panel found by adding /wp-admin at the end of your blog’s URL
  • Add new category or tags to organize your blog posts – found under “Posts” (but do not remove the pre-existing “edci335” category).
  • See if your blog posts are appearing on the course website (you must have the the edci335 category assigned to a post first and have provided your instructor with your blog URL)
  • Add pages, if you like.
  • Include hyperlinks in your posts (select text and click on the link icon in the post toolbar)
  • Embed images or set featured images and embed video in blog posts and pages (can be your own media or that found on the internet, but consider free or creative commons licensed works). To embed a YouTube video, simply paste the URL on its own line.
  • Under Dashboard/Appearance,
    • Select your preferred website theme and customize to your preferences (New title, new header image, etc.)
    • Customize menus & navigation
    • Use widgets to customize blog content and features
  • Delete this starter post (or switch it to draft status if you want to keep it for reference)

Do consider creating categories for each course that you take should you wish to document your learning (or from professional learning activities outside of formal courses). Keep note, however, that you may wish to rename the label of the course category in menus (e.g., as we did where it shows “Learning Design” as the label for the “edci335” category menu.  This will enable readers not familiar with university course numbers to understand what to expect in the contents.

Lastly, as always, be aware of the FIPPA as it relates to privacy and share only those names/images that you have consent to use or are otherwise public figures. When in doubt, ask us.
